(Nov. 2007) Fall 2007 Auction Historically Significant with the Sale of The John Moores Angling Collection
Impressive in its own right, this collection includes the finest American sporting book collection ever to be assembled by the greatest sporting book publishing company of all time, Derrydale Press, but this unprecedented collection also includes the earliest fishing tackle to be offered at auction: 1760's Ustonson rod, Ustonson multiplying reel, 1871 Thomas Tout fly rod, 17th century Pirn reel, 1860 Norris fly rod, 1850's Fritz Vom Hofe NY reel, extraordinary 1890's pearl presentation reel, 1800 Clarke/Higginbotham split bamboo rod, etc. There are also numerous famous personality items, originally owned by past presidents such as FDR, Herbert Hoover and Grover Cleveland, as well as sports and fly fishing icons such as Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, Lee Wulff, Sparse Grey Hackle, Edward Hewitt, Ray Bergman, etc. Movie related personalities are also represented with items from Bing Crosby, Robert Montgomery and Norman Maclean of A River Runs Through It fame.
In addition to the extraordinary content, what will truly set this collection apart from all others is the notoriety of the owner and the benefit this collection will provide. John Moores is best known to the public as the owner of the San Diego Padres. He will generously donate all proceeds from the sale of his treasured collection to the Carter Center "to wage peace, fight disease and build hope". President Jimmy Carter, a fly fishing enthusiast, has personally endorsed this sale with a hand written letter which is included in the auction catalog. A collection for charity of this magnitude is a first in the field of fishing tackle collecting.
In addition to the aforementioned, another major collection will be offered during the two day auction of equal importance to a passionate group of collectors in a wholly different category: The largest collection of Zane Grey's personal possessions to ever come to auction, with provenance originating from the Grey family Altadena mansion.
These truly museum worthy artifacts are of great historic importance and provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for Zane Grey collectors from novice to advanced.

The trend towards the strongest prices paid for the rarest examples in outstanding condition continues in every category and at every price level. Starting the second session, The Kerry Chatham Collection, also creating world wide attention, for the most important gathering of the rarest American reels to ever come to auction.
